President of Thalassaemia International Federation

Co-Chairman of Board of Trustees of Sultan Bin Khalifa International Thalassemia Award

Vice PresidentWith the present message, I would like on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Thalassaemia International Federation to express my sincere gratitude and deep appreciation to His Royal Highness Dr. Sheikh Sultan Bin Khalifa Al Nahyan of Abu Dhabi, for recognizing Thalassaemia as a major global and regional public health problem and for establishing the international award for Thalassaemia.

A number of important scientific advances in the prevention and management of chronic diseases and research on holistic treatment have taken place over the past few years. Advances in the last decade allow us to today to safely say that Hemoglobinopathies, of which Thalassaemia is the major syndrome, can be effectively controlled. Available international guidelines safeguard today the survival and sure improvement of the quality of life of patients, where national strategies and free access of health care to all patients are established.

Our ongoing concern, however, is to place Thalassaemia high on the priority agenda of every national health authority around the world. The idea of such high level award, I feel, will constitute the other major development in recent years through raising awareness, creating competitiveness, providing motivation and encouragement to all involved, essential stakeholders/partners: policy makers, academia, health research and patients’/ carers’/parents’ communities, industry and the community at large.

The United Arab Emirates present an exemplary picture in this field, and it is, I believe, very timely and most appropriate that an international award is established in this country and region. We feel extremely privileged and honored for having been selected by His Royal Highness to collaborate on this very important project, to which, on behalf of the Board of Directors of the Thalassaemia International Federation, I pledge our full support and commitment.

The Thalassaemia International Federation safeguards the fundamental right of patients’ access to quality healthcare and other care necessary through the work of 108 national associations in over 60 countries.
